Health Protocols

  • Pre-Entry Checks for Students, Staff, and Visitors (all learning modes)


    • Temperature checks prior to start of the instructional day (infrared)
      • Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be isolated and referred to the nurse for follow-up (temperature will be retaken with an oral thermometer)
    • Car Riders
      • Will be dropped off out back (same as prior years) but will proceed to the closest entrance (3 entrances total to avoid clustering) to have their temperature checked by faculty and staff. *Map to follow with directional indicators
    • Bus Riders
      • Will be dropped off out front (same as prior years) and will have their temperature checked by faculty and staff. Buses will unload two at a time into separate lines to avoid clustering.
    • All students will report directly to their classroom upon arrival to avoid clustering in common areas.
      • Students choosing to eat breakfast will “grab and go” to their classroom
    • As students arrive in their classroom, their teacher will complete a Daily COVID-19 Screening:
      • Have you been in close contact with a person who had a confirmed case of COVID-19?
      • Are you experiencing a cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat?
      • Have you had a fever in the last 48 hours?
      • Have you had a new loss of taste or smell?
      • Have you had vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours
    • Anyone exhibiting symptoms will be isolated and referred to the nurse for follow-up

    • Visitors will be limited to the secure vestibule near the front office unless they are doing business with the school (e.g. repairs and deliveries)
    • Visitors will have both a temperature check and a symptom check prior to entry to the building.
      • Should a visitor have an elevated temperature or exhibit symptoms, they will not be permitted into the school. The business and appropriate district personnel will be notified.
    • Student Items
      • A drop-off center will be located in the secure vestibule. Staff will retrieve and distribute items once the visitor has exited the building.
    • Student Check-In/ Check-Out
      • Parents signing in/out their child will be permitted into the office with a mask (provided by the school)to show ID. Parents will be restricted to wait on their child in the secure vestibule.
    • Meetings with MJE
      • All meetings will continue to be held virtually using google meet and docusign (e.g. IEP, 504, parent-teacher conferences, SIT meetings, open-house)

    Policies for Risk Mitigation (all learning modes)

    Contracted Cleanings

    • SMS will deep clean every evening with special attention to common/ high traffic areas
    • SMS will use electrostatic sprayers to disinfect student and teacher desks after school hours
    • SMS staff will be present during school hours to assist in sanitation as needed in the building at the direction of the administration (e.g. in the cafeteria during lunch)

    Classroom Cleanings

    • Teachers will facilitate disinfection of desks and other classroom furniture at the beginning/ end of each class and at class changes
    • No students supplies will be shared
    • Students will be provided with their own set of needed materials (e.g. manipulatives, flash cards, copies of texts)
    • Should an item need to be reused (e.g. library books) they will only be given after appropriate cleaning by an adult

    Cafeteria Cleanings

    • Cafeteria tables will be cleaned by SMS staff between each and every class
    • All classes will sit at assigned tables and assigned seats every day in all learning modes (traditional and hybrid)
    • In a hybrid setting, students will be distanced and grouped
      • No more than 4 students per table
    • Nutrition staff will enter student lunch codes to avoid students using the pinpad
    • School lunch options will be “grab and go”
      • No serving lines or self serve fruit and milk stations will be open
      • No lunch trays as in previous years
      • School lunches will be packaged by nutrition staff

    Water Fountains

    • Water fountains will be open as bottle filling stations only

    Nurse’s Clinic

    • Masks will be strongly encouraged(and provided for by the school) for students and staff that enter the clinic. 
    • Hand sanitizer will be used when students enter and exit the clinic
    • Nurse Alex will only see one student in the clinic at a time and will ensure the clinic is properly sanitized between students
    • Medical Designees (faculty and staff who are trained by the district) will be utilized as much as possible to minimize risk for students who may otherwise have to visit the clinic more often (e.g. use an inhaler or take daily medication at school)
    • Teachers will be provided with items to reduce the number of clinic referrals (e.g. tooth fairy bags, bandaids, etc)
    • Clinic referrals will be made electronically by teachers
      • Nurse Alex will evaluate referrals and advise teachers on when to send the student to her clinic or to a designated area

    Health Promotion

    • Congregation of Students/ Student Groups
      • Students will report directly to classrooms and be dismissed from classrooms in staggered order
      • Classes will operate with the cohort model in mind
        • K-2 self-contained classes
        • 3-5 teamed groups of teachers and rotations by homeroom
      • Classes will be distanced and have assigned seating in all areas (buses, classrooms, cafeteria, zones at recess)
    • Instruction
      • As appropriate for their age, teachers will use mini-lessons throughout the year to address and remind students of practices that prevent the spread of Covid-19 (e.g. handwashing, hand sanitizer, distancing from others when possible)
    • Media
      • Printed posters will be placed around the school at common areas to promote practices that prevent the spread of Covid-19 (e.g. hand washing reminders above sinks and in restrooms)

    Face Coverings

    • Face coverings required on buses
    • Face coverings recommended at school for students
    • Face coverings required at school for all adults (when within 6 feet of others)

    Bus Cleanings

    • The transportation department will oversee the daily sanitation of buses

    Student Trips

    • There will be no field trips for the 20-21 school year

    What Happens If Someone Tests Positive for Covid 19?

    • Upon learning of a positive case, notification of those in close proximity begins while the positive Covid 19 individual follows medical orders, including quarantine.(EX. a person's classes, lunch table, sports team, and related staff)

    • Individuals notified will be asked to monitor symptoms and seek medical attention as needed.

    • Schools continue to monitor symptoms of students and staff.

    • Students and staff may return to school/work based upon orders from doctor.


Academic Instruction

  • Traditional Mode

    Typical school experience with the following exceptions:

    • Assigned seats for students in all settings
    • Students report directly to and are dismissed from classrooms
    • 3-5 classes rotate by homerooms with cleaning protocols in place before and after switching rooms
    • Assigned rotating zones at recess and recess equipment (e.g. basketball court on Monday and soccer field on Tuesday)
    • Hygiene lessons throughout the day/week/year
    • No sharing of student materials or supplies
    • Face coverings required for students who ride the bus
    • School breakfast “grab and go”

    Hybrid Mode

    Students will experience a combination of remote and traditional learning:

    • Mondays no students report
      • Teachers have planning, office hours, and meetings
    • Students report to MJE 2 days each week on their assigned days (A or B)
      • A or B is determined by transportation department
      • Parents will be notified by school staff on the first day of school and it will become available in Skyward
    • On days students do not report, they will have remote learning assignments through Thrivist
    • This mode will only be used as needed to respond to Covid-19 cases in our district and/ or school community (decision made by the director of schools)
    • K-2 teachers will be self-contained (same as traditional) 3-5 teachers will rotate in and out of rooms utilizing health and safety precautions (e.g. washing hands between working with different groups of students; wearing masks)
    • Students traveling about the building will be limited
    • Cleaning protocols will be in place for groups of students that are required to move about the building for any reasons (e.g. disinfecting of room before and after using)
    • Students will have assigned seats in every setting (same as traditional)
    • Students will have assigned zones and equipment at recess (same as traditional)

    Remote Mode

    • Students will participate in both self-paced (asynchronous) and live lessons (synchronous) at the direction of their teachers at MJE
    • All synchronous learning that students must log-on for will be scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays
    • Each grade level will have a unique schedule that is similar to the schedule they have while in traditional and hybrid modes
    • Teachers will have daily office hours to field questions from families, assist individual students or small groups of students based on student need
    • Students will be issued devices for use at home
    • Teachers will communicate your child’s individual remote schedule during the first week of school
    • For remote learning, MJE will provide parents a personalized schedule for their child.  
    • Students will bring home their schedule the first week of school. 
    • These schedules will have both asynchronous (self-paced) and synchronous (live, teacher directed) lessons. 
    • Times for synchronous lessons will vary by grade level (e.g. K-2 30 minutes of live ELA and 3-5 45 minutes of live ELA).  
    • All synchronous learning will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays 
    • Your child’s teacher may invite them to additional sessions based on their individual needs.  
    • If your child qualifies for RTI, Exceptional Education, or other related services, those details will be included on their individual schedule. 
    • Check out the Remote Learning video from WCS on preparing a learning spot at home for your child.  
    • All students will be provided with Remote Learning Toolkits that contain manipulatives and materials students can use for more interactive and effective learning in remote mode.  Teachers will practice using the materials with students in traditional mode to make sure students understand how to use all the tools. 

Social-Emotional Supports

    • MJE will have an  focus on Social and Emotional Competencies this school year
      • Students will participate in explicit instruction from both their homeroom teacher and the school counselor using the Choose Love and the Second Step curriculum
    • MJE has a school counselor on site to assist with any specific student needs as well

Your Support is Appreciated!

  • Below is a list of items needed. If you would like to donate cleaning items or supplies. Items can be dropped off in front of school daily between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the designated bin.

    • Disposable masks
    • Kleenexes or tissues
    • Paper towels
    • Unscented disinfectant spray
    • Unscented hand sanitizer (methanol free)
    • Unscented disinfectant wipes
    • Non-latex gloves and bandaids
    • Batteries for touchless thermometers (AAA)

Technology Integration

  • Technology Devices

    All students (K-5) will be issued a WCS device to use at the direction of their teacher during classroom instruction and hybrid and remote learning modes.  

    • Parents will need to review and sign the WCS Acceptable Use Policy (will send home the first week of school) and the WCS Student Device Agreement prior to a student being issued a device.  
    • Students will take their school issued device home at their teacher’s direction.
    • Should your child leave their device at school and need it at home for remote learning, you will be able to pick it up through the front office during school hours (7:30-2:30).  
    • While we prefer that all students complete their work on their device, if for some reason the downloading option does not work, MJE teachers can make printed learning packets available for you to pick up at the front office. 
      • You will need to arrange this with your child’s teacher prior to arriving at school.  

    Technology Support

    If a student has limited internet access at home, MJE will have wifi available in the parking lot of our campus during school hours.

    • Should you experience technical difficulties, your first line of support will be your child’s teacher. 
    • Teachers will be working with students during the first week of school to ensure all students have some exposure and experience working with and in Thrivist. 
    • Under hybrid and remote options, all teachers will have office hours which are designed for them to be available to you to discuss any needs including technology support.
      • If your child’s teacher is unable to to help you resolve an issue, they will refer you to MJE’s digital support team which includes our school’s Digital Technology Leader as well as other teachers and administrators who are qualified to assist you.


    • For hybrid and remote learning, student will be able to access a variety of applications to support their learning.
    • Thrivist will be the primary application used by your child’s teacher to communicate activities and materials needed for lessons and assign work.
    • WCS will be releasing more information on Thrivist in the coming weeks through their Parent University, so stay tuned!
