Suicide Facts
-
- 7 in 100,000 young people between the age of 15-19 die by suicide each year
- When you break the numbers down, that’s 5 out of every 100,000 girls, and 14 out of every 100,000 boys
- Between 2007 and 2015 alone, suicide rates doubled among teenage girls and increased by more than 30-percent, among teenage boys
- In teenage girls, the suicide rate has reached a 40-year high
- There is one suicide for every estimated 25 suicide attempts. (CDC)
- Major depression among U.S. teens, especially girls, has jumped 37% in the last decade
- Experts say there’s no single factor causing this spike. Heavy social media use, substance abuse, mental illness, bullying, economic concerns, and family problems are all risk factors for depression
- Research shows that teen depression rates are on the rise, yet sigma or fear of asking for help often prevents them from seeking help.
- Lesbian, gay, and bisexual kids are 3x more likely to attempt suicide at some point in their lives
- Each time an LGBTQ person is a victim of physical or verbal harassment or abuse, they become 2.5X more likely to hurt themselves
